This Friday reflection is an extra serving of words and water for paid subscribers to Wednesdays at the Well, a glimpse behind the scenes of Not My Grandmother’s Hymnal: Composing a Curious Faith, coming March 10th.

The book started with 6 poems and grew to over 100. The final version has 67. Choosing the poems to include and the ones to take out was an arduous process. There were sticky notes everywhere and I ran out of note cards. I moved them around in circles and placed them in categories. I took them on walks. Invited them to speak. There are many factors that went into the decisions of which poems to cut.

The poem I share with you here was written in 2012 for my Introduction to Theology course in seminary. At the time I loved it and really loved that I could submit a poem rather than a long essay to complete an assignment.
